The Friday Photo: Red Sea of Tranquillity

If there’s one thing that’s typical of a Dahab evening, it’s this. Sitting on cushions, looking out over the Red Sea…

Cushions and rocks leading out to sea in Dahab, Egypt.

At least one cat under the low table…

Cat lounging on carpets in Dahab, Egypt.

A cold beer on it…
Egyptian Stella beer on the table.

And the mountains of Saudi glowing pink with heat across a millpond sea.

I finally took the step of upgrading from the kit lens on my camera, partly cos I broke it. I took these with a fixed lens Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 Mk IICanon EF 50mm f/1.8 Mk II.

It cost just over $100, and chatters a bit, as you’d expect at the price, but goes all the way down to 1.8, and the bokeh and the colours are just lovely.

I have that lens too and it is just bloody awesome for the price 😀

Isn’t it just?! The other one I bought requires an instruction CD, and I still haven’t got the hang of it. I think it’s awesome, too, but certainly not as intuitive as this one…

Yep – you’ve captured exactly what Dahab was like for me! Great photos. I don’t remember the sea being so pink but I remember staring at Saudia Arabia for hours on end.

The pinkness is the heat haze at this time of year: apparently it is INSANELY hot in Saudi. So glad that’s how Dahab was for you too. We’re going to miss this place…

  3. Love love LOVE that last photo. The colours are stunning.

Thank you, Tom! That’s actually how it is here. Very, very beautiful indeed. We are going to miss it when we move on…

Danke schön. I really do need to do more structured picture posts. Going to try and do an underwater thing on Wednesday. Fingers crossed for me…
