Hi Carmen, Jakarta is a big city and a tough city to love, though some do love it: it’s also an expensive place to live, with a lot of traffic. I’d recommend you look for work in Yogya instead, which is MUCH more livable, or indeed other Javanese cities. Cheers, Theodora

I’m all over your blog it seems. But I guess that means I really enjoy reading it! Anyways, I mentioned on another page the working as an ESL teacher thing in Bali. This is not working out so well, and although I might get some online teaching work, it might not sustain us financially for too long. I’m going to Bali on bare minimum – I mean less than most people would take for a 2 week holiday!
SO, have you lived in Jakarta? Any thoughts on the place? It seems to be loaded with ESL jobs. Might be a ‘last resort’ for me if things get tough. 🙂

Most people I tell have the same reaction as one of your comments from a chappy who thought all single Mums were on welfare and whose poor children need help from non-single Mum type of people! I’ve had very little encouragement. People can have some funny little minds with some funny little ideas. But renting short-term before committing to longterm is definitely the way to go. For surf, you’re looking at the Bukit or Canggu mainly – Canggu has a broader choice of schools….
