Seems like only in America the squat and poop is unheard of. I was born in The Ukraine and I was pretty much raised with this cocept in mind. Eventually I moved to the U.S and decided forget the old ways and sit down and smoke a cigarette. I think the reason china has such terrible restrooms is because of the population. The major cities are so over flowed that upgrades have not caught up. They found they most efficient way to make it work (surprise that's what the Chinese are famous for) basically cheapest way to have public shiters exist. Who cares if I get turds in my sandels at least I'm helping my country. Wake up America.... sacrifice sometimes

I'm so grateful to find this post! We are hosting a 12yo boy from China for 2 weeks, and he keeps using the bathroom with the door open. I asked my husband to explain protocol, but so far, no dice. Luckily our family is pretty casual between my husband, son, and me about this sort of thing, but it's odd with a near total stranger. I feel like I should educate him on US toilet standards, but it's not clear how to do that without giving offense or causing embarrassment. So I hide when he uses the toilet. At least now I have some context for understanding his toilet habits!

Yeah, I am on my way to a year in China now. Sounds like I am in for an adventure. Someone else mentioned India. I have been to India and only encounterned western toilets the entire time. But there were some totally nasty public restrooms at parks...the kind where you open the door and you immediately close it and go "No...just no." lol

One of my worst experiences was in an office building in a city in China, cant recall which city, perhaps Chongqing, everyone well dressed. But the squat toilets, clearly they weren't interested in getting it in the hole. I was just able to hold my breath long enough - only just. No way could I have had a squat as you would be standing in it. Now working in an office building in Sydney which is heavily Chinese and unfortunately its getting that way here. No squat toilets but that doesn't stop them bringing their bathroom habits here. The building manager has put instructions up on the wall on how to use the toilets, no standing on it, flush the used toilet paper and don't throw it on the floor etc. It gets real wet and messy in their as the day goes on. Never imagined I would see it in Australia!

Ummm.... no, it's not a joke. It's based on an unscientific sample of Chinese city apartments that we've visited. What I tend to notice on metro rides, to be honest, is how neat and well-groomed people are at any time of day: if you're talking about rural poor, then the situation is, obviously, different.

"Chinese cities are at least as clean as European cities. And you could eat your dinner off the bathroom floor in the average family home…"

IS THIS A JOKE? I have been to many many countries, of which many poorer than China, but nowhere are the households as dirty and truly disgusting as in China. Walk into any house in even a 2 or year old building in the city center of the largest cities and you will be shocked. I live in China for over 5 years so I have some experience.. It still amazes me how unhygienic Chinese are. Take a ride on the metro and you will notice it;s not only their homes....

Just disgusting - no words can describe how absolutely foul these people can be in this area of hygiene - an NO I am not racist.I'm a Caucasian Australian, and I live with 4 young Chinese people, and 1 Indian guy - and the Indian is by far the winner in the toilet hygiene & etiquette! I am 50 y/o and have lived with many races, in all types of social-strata, and yet in particular, Chinese urine/feces gets me every time. I have never smelled anything quite like it, and will often go to the mall to do my thing so that I don't have to smell it. It really is the worst thing I have ever had to smell period. I can take the smell of dead bodies over it - it is THAT bad. I would never go to China - not in a million years, if it can be this bad in another country! Sheesh..

omg, reading the comments here I couldn't decide whether to laugh or cry lol The 2nd pic posted takes my first prize lol I also experienced squat toilets in Venice (well, they were so close to the ground users had to squat). Good idea when entering a squat toilet is to leave handbags, coats etc with someone so your hands are free ;)
