Pictures of Nepal

I may have spent the last few posts bitching and whining about Kathmandu, but…

We did, honestly, love Nepal.

So here’s my favourite pictures of Nepal.

Pictures of Nepal: alpenglow illuminates Everest behind Nuptse.

The alpenglow catches Everest behind Nuptse, seen from Kala Patthar.

Pictures of Nepal: Vendor of coloured dyes in Kathmandu.

A man selling coloured powders for ritual purposes in Kathmandu.

Pictures of Nepal: puja (offering) for Deepawali.

And an offering to Lakshmi, goddess of wealth, made with these self-same dyes.

Pictures of Nepal: little girls dancing for Deepawali.

We were in Pokhara for Deepawali, and these little girls were going from house to house in their best clothes dancing, rather as children might sing carols in the UK.

Pictures of Nepal: Ama Dablam wrapped in mist.

My favourite mountain ever — Ama Dablam — from our Everest Base Camp trek.

Pictures of Nepal: Shiva shrines at Pashupatinath, Kathmandu.

Serried ranks of Shiva shrines at the temple of Pashupatinath in Kathmandu.

Pictures of Nepal: sadhus by the Shiva shrines at Pashupatinath.

Idling holy men, or sadhus, posing at Pashupatinath.

Pictures of Nepal: sunrise from Gokyo Ri.

Sunrise from Gokyo Ri.

Pictures of Nepal: brightly coloured boats on Lake Phewa, Pokhara.

Boats on Lake Phewa, in the lakeside town of Pokhara.

Pictures of Nepal: old man garlanded for Deepawali.

And the father of our host in Pokhara garlanded for Deepawali.

Pictures of Nepal: prayer flags en route to Machermo Ri.

Prayer flags in the Himalayas, on our way up Machermo Ri.

Pictures of Nepal: interior of monastery at Tengboche.

The gorgeous colours of the Tibetan monastery at Tengboche.

Pictures of Nepal: a loo with a view in Tengboche.

And a loo with a view in that self-same spot.

Pictures of Nepal: Ama Dablam with chorten and juniper.

Ama Dablam again, with a chorten and juniper in the foreground. I LOVE this mountain.

Pictures of Nepal: Sherpa mother and baby outside Namche.

A Sherpa mother and her baby namaste-ing on our way out from Namche Bazar to Everest Base Camp (you can read my Everest Base Camp FAQ here, if you’d like).

Pictures of Nepal: Down jackets for babies hanging up in Namche Bazar.

And these absolutely adorable miniature down jackets, their sleeves sealed in lieu of mittens, sold for the Sherpa babies in the Khumbu.

We didn’t see as much of Nepal as we’d have liked.

But I guess that’s a reason to come back…

Wonderful pictures, makes want to go back to Nepal immediately. I only saw Ama Dablam from my sightseeing flight but she is beautiful indeed!

    • Theodora says:

She is absolutely gorgeous from every angle, Stefanie. The moment I saw her, I understood why people want to climb, want to summit — she is amazing.

    Wonderful pictures – such colour!

  3. Rilla says:

I wish I could somehow capture those same vibrant colours in my own home! So beautiful. Thanks for sharing. I went and checked out the other pics as well. You have a very good eye for pics.

These are some of my favorite pictures you have ever posted. Stunning! I want to go to Nepal.

Beautiful pictures! I was in Nepal for far too short a time and am looking forward to going back. It’s a really wonderful country. I actually took the same photo you did of the Shiva shrines in Pashupatinath and one very similar to the one you took of the boats on Phewa Tal 🙂

    • Theodora says:

Yes! Both those shots are quite hard to resist, aren’t they? Along with the prayer flags ones…

Amazing photos! I visited Nepal when I was travelling and it was one of my favourite countries so far. Hopefully I can take my kids there one day.

I just discovered your blog and I can’t wait to spend some time going through the archives – I’m particularly enjoying your Bali posts as I live in Ubud 🙂

    • Theodora says:

Ah, so glad you’re enjoying the Bali stuff. I do love Bali and that’s almost certainly where we’ll end up next year — in Ubud, in particular. Nepal’s actually surprisingly good with kids, provided they can cope with long bus rides, so I really would recommend it…

  7. What can I say about Nepal, one of the most fascinating places on the planet. Love it. Love the picture of the sadhus.

  8. Bethaney says:

I love how different the colourful urban shots are from the alpine photos. It’s like vibrancy and then peace.

(I’d love one of those little down puffers for Reuben. Too cute.)

  9. I had a wonderful little Nepalese girl in my class last year. Seeing these pictures of things she’s actually draw for me made my heart soar!!

    • Theodora says:

Nepalese children are absolutely lovely. Lucky her to have visited these places — so many Nepalese don’t ever get to see their own country.

  10. Your photos are wonderful. Loved your story too.

  11. Gorgeous! Now this is what I imagine Nepal to look like!

    • Theodora says:

It is very, very beautiful. I wish we’d got down to the lowlands, but, ya know, visas and all…

  12. Stunning pictures, I loved all of them 🙂

  13. Just incredible photos…I’ve loved your posts lately from Nepal/Everest.

    • Theodora says:

Thanks, Dan. Once I’m through the doom and gloom on China there’ll be some good China stuff coming up too, I promise!

  14. I think the alpenglow is my favourite! Although the loo with a view comes pretty close 😉

  15. Great photos. Thanks for posting. Nepal just seems like one of the most interesting places on earth.

    • Theodora says:

For a tiny country — if you look at its land mass on a map rather than try and calculate surface area — Nepal’s got a tonne going on.

  16. Hi Theodora! I live in Nepal and don’t have pictures of Nepal as good as you. Thanks for having beautiful pictures of Nepal. Love to see you someday in Nepal…

    • Theodora says:

Thank you! I’m sure we’ll be back one day. I’d like to do the Himalayan Trail…

  17. Ariana says:

Nepal is such a colorful country. The sight of the mountains struck me most. I’d love doing mountain climbing someday.

    Thanks for the amazing photos!
